The PlastiCity team in Southend-on-Sea began the PlastiCity Pledge which allowed partners to become greener. As part of the Pledge, those that signed up were given recycling boxes for mixed plastic to help them get better with their recycling. The aim was to help them recycle more and collect data on what plastic is collected and the amount.

Since the start of the PlastiCity Pledge in November 2022, we had 67 organisations taking part that included businesses, schools, faith groups, charities and public buildings such as museums and libraries. Each group was given five recycling boxes for collection of mixed plastic.

PlastiCity partners results:

Sector, number of partners, total boxes, weight collected, types of plastic
Sector Number of Partners Total boxes Total weight (kg) Types of plastic
School 17 12 62.34 HDPE, LDPE, PP
Charity 9 1 83.88 LDPE, PP
Faith centre 8 4 15.04 LDPE, PP
Business 28 22 172.21 ABS, ASA, PETG, PLA, HDPE, LDPE, PP
Public building 5 3 11.77 LDPE, PP

The steps below show how the plastic is being made into new products.

  1. Collection - plastic waste is collected in a PlastiCity recycling box.
  2. Delivery - the full boxes are sent to the MyFactory recycling centre.
  3. Sorting - the waste is sorted so that any non-plastic waste is removed.
  4. Shredding - the plastic is washed and shredded into fine pieces.
  5. Board Mill - the shredded plastic is heated and pressed to make a strong and tough plastic board to make different products.
