Cool Towns

Cool Towns is a European funded programme (Interreg 2 Seas). It will help local councils in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands deliver town greening projects. This will help them understand how to reduce the effects of heat stress in their cities and towns.

It will look at how green space projects can help reduce the future impacts of heat stress in Southend. The works will include:

  • two greening designs to show how this can help to reduce heat stress in town centre. These will take place by joining existing Southend High Street projects like the Town-Centre Redevelopment Improvement Projects (TRIPS) and Southend Central Area Transport Scheme (S-CATS)
  • to install an external living wall at a Southend primary school to help promote the Cool Towns project. It will also improve air quality of the school and help to cool the building during sweltering summer days
  • an installation of solar-powered water fountains at a Southend secondary school that will help promote the Cool Towns project. It will also provide free drinking water to staff and students, especially during the summer months

Further information about the project can be found on the Cool Towns website and on their Cool Towns EN video on YouTube.
