SARCC (Sustainable and Resilient Coastal Cities)
The Sustainable and Resilient Coastal Cities (SARCC) project was carried out in Southend alongside partner towns and cities across Europe. This project was funded by the Interreg 2 Seas Programme. SARCC helped coastal towns explore new, natural ways to deal with the effects of climate change. Instead of relying only on hard sea defences, this project showed how nature-based solutions such as planting vegetation and enhancing green spaces could protect our coastline. As a result, supporting local wildlife and making Southend a safer place to live.
During the project, Southend took part in research and practical work that improved understanding of how nature can help reduce the risk of flooding and coastal erosion. SARCC also brought local organisations and residents together, building awareness and inspiring future projects that continue to make Southend’s coast stronger, greener, and better prepared for the challenges of climate change.
Since coming to an end in 2023, SARCC helped those working in coastal defence gain a better understanding of the benefits of nature-based solutions over traditional methods.
