Supporting Energy-Efficiency by Retrofitting Southend’s Homes
Southend-on-Sea City Council has steadily been improving the energy efficiency of their social housing stock. These are properties managed by South Essex Homes.
These retrofit works help keep energy bills lower for residents, whilst reducing carbon emissions. By upgrading existing homes, we can make them more energy-efficient, warmer, and cheaper to run. Visit our retrofit page to understand better what retrofit is and to see examples.
Over 72% of South Essex Homes properties now have an EPC rating of level ‘C’ or above. The Council is developing a fully costed programme to ensure that all remaining homes achieve EPC ‘C’ by the year 2030. This programme will reduce the overall carbon footprint of the council’s housing stock by at least 17% and enable Southend to comply with current government targets for energy efficiency of social housing. The work to bring all remaining properties up to EPC ‘C’, supporting the council’s wider goal of decarbonising their housing by 2050.
To help reach these targets, Southend-on-Sea City Council previously carried out retrofit work in Leigh-on-Sea. Currently, they are working on a clean energy project for Balmoral residents. To learn more, visit these pages or the council's dedicated page on their Warm Homes projects.
