Southend-on-Sea City Council staff marked Earth Day by taking part in clean-up events, eco activities and green careers initiatives across Essex.

Wednesday 22nd April marked International Earth Day. To show their support, staff from Southend-on-Sea City Council attended a range of events across Essex. Teams helped clean areas in the city centre, learned about opportunities to boost green jobs in Southend, and met residents who are passionate about protecting nature and the environment.

One of our Climate Change Officers joined residents at The Boundary in Garon Park for a variety of eco-friendly activities, including a hands-on composting workshop. Participants created their own mini compost using food waste and natural materials such as sticks, soil and grass. Over time, this compost will break down, providing a nutrient-rich base for the pea plants handed out at the event.

Meanwhile, our Queensway team took part in a local litter pick for Earth Day. They collected 15 bags of rubbish in total, helping to keep the area clean and welcoming for the community. Small, practical actions like this play an important role in caring for our local environment and reinforcing shared responsibility for the places we live, work and travel through every day.

Another of our Climate Change Officers attended a Clean Energy Jobs and Careers Fair, organised by Chelmsford College. The event provided an opportunity to learn from other councils across Essex and explore ways to increase access to green jobs in Southend. Stallholders included the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), South Essex College, Houghton Group and many others. By attending events like these and working with local partners, we hope to help residents gain the skills needed to enter careers that contribute to a greener economy.

We would love to hear what you got up to for Earth Day- email us with photos or share what you learned!
