Tree Wardens Volunteer Scheme
In partnership with The Tree Council and Southend-on-Sea City Council, the Tree Wardens volunteer scheme was launched in April 2025.
This grassroots initiative brings together local volunteers who care deeply about the trees in their community. Work takes place across street trees, parks, woodlands, and orchards, helping to nurture and protect Southend’s natural environment.
By volunteering, you’ll be supporting Southend City Council’s target to increase the city’s tree canopy cover from 13% to 15% by 2050.
Being part of the Tree Wardens Network gives residents the opportunity to:
- Increase urban greenery
- Attend and/or organise tree planting, maintenance, and watering
- Prune and care for orchard trees
- Propagate and grow trees from seed
- Boost biodiversity
- Monitor local wildlife
- Enhance the beauty of Southend’s neighbourhoods
- Help ensure trees thrive in Southend for years to come
No prior experience is needed, and all training and equipment will be provided. There will be regular meetings, newsletters and seminars to keep you up to date with what The Wardens are up to. However, there is no minimum time commitment- so you can volunteer in a way that suits you.
If you’re interested in helping Southend's trees continue to flourish along with other like-minded people, send an email to treewardens@southend.gov.uk, who can provide further information.
