Great British Energy is expected to launch funding opportunities this Summer- start preparing now!

The Greater South East Net Zero Hub (GSENZH) is encouraging community energy groups and local authorities to start preparing for new funding opportunities from Great British Energy (GBE), expected to launch this summer.

Although the funding has not yet been formally approved, GBE has suggested that community groups and organisations begin developing projects and partnerships ahead of the application window opening.

It is expected there will be two different funds up for grabs:

  • GBE Community Fund- available to Community Energy Groups
  • Partnership Grant- for Local Authorities & Community Energy Groups

GBE Community Fund

At stage 1, it is expected that up to £40,000 will be available, and up to £100,000 at stage 2. A potential Stage 3 capital grant is also being explored to support projects at the construction stage.

Community energy groups can prepare now by:

  • Developing draft applications using previous guidance and templates.
  • Begin scoping projects and delivery options.
  • Gathering early cost estimates and quotes. Applicants will likely be required to provide three quotes for commissioned work.

Partnership Grant

A new Partnership Grant is also expected to launch, supporting collaboration between local authorities (as lead applicants) and community energy groups. There will be a two-stage feasibility funding process with up to £40,000 available at stage 1 to support partnership development and early-stage feasibility work, and up to £100,000 at stage 2.

Begin preparing for this fund now by:

  • Starting to build or strengthen your relationship with your local authority if you’re part of a community energy group.
  • Developing draft applications using previous guidance and templates.
  • Begin scoping projects and delivery options.
  • Identify a partner organisation or demonstrate how partnership opportunities are being explored.

The Greater South East Net Zero Hub can provide advice and support to help you develop a strong application ahead of time, so we encourage you to contact them with your initial project ideas!
