Work has begun- residents and visitors can now benefit from improved electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities following the launch of new charging points at Alexandra Street Car Park.
The new chargers, installed as part of Southend's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) programme, are now fully operational and available for public use. Operated by charging network provider Zest, the upgraded infrastructure replaces the previous charging facilities, offering drivers improved access to reliable and convenient EV charging.
The installation marks another significant milestone in Southend's ongoing commitment to supporting the transition to cleaner transport and climate action efforts. By expanding access to public charging infrastructure, the project will make it easier for drivers to switch to electric vehicles, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to improved air quality across the city, creating a cleaner and healthier environment for residents and future generations.
The Alexandra Street chargers form part of a wider programme that represents one of the largest local EV charging schemes in the UK. The initiative is supported by £1.4 million in funding from the Government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, alongside substantial investment from delivery partner Zest. Importantly, the scheme delivers this investment without any cost to the Council.
As more charging locations are introduced across the city, residents will have greater confidence and convenience when choosing electric vehicles, supporting Southend's ambition to become a greener, more sustainable city.
