The Climate Change team joined energy experts and other councils from across the region to explore the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of local energy projects.
Last week saw the annual conference of the Greater South East NetZero Hub. Net Zero Hubs are government-funded regional initiatives that support local authorities and other public sector organisations in developing and financing local energy projects.
Held at London's Coin Street Conference Centre, the event brought together local authorities, funding organisations, academics, community energy groups and other stakeholders from across the region to share insights and best practice on local energy planning and delivery.
Southend-on-Sea City Council's Climate Change team attended the conference and heard from a range of organisations about the opportunities and challenges involved in delivering local energy projects. The event provided valuable insights that will help inform the Council's approach to local energy planning and support work towards achieving Southend's climate ambitions.
Topics covered by speakers included:
- A recent government emphasis on ensuring that local energy projects deliver wider benefits such as jobs, skills development and lower energy costs.
- A recognition that innovative ways to attract funding are needed in light of council’s limited budget for energy projects.
- Local and central government to address barriers preventing the uptake of home energy efficiency and retrofit measures by residents.
- Engaging communities effectively in place-based energy projects while recognising differing local needs and capacities.
- The practical lessons learned by councils, NHS trusts and higher education in delivering major energy projects in the current environment.
